Compliance with social norms has both a bright side and a dark side. On the positive, having some basic behaviors that people follow to get along with colleagues and neighbors helps teams perform more fluidly. It keeps society organized and helps us enforce the rule of law. It keeps meetings orderly. It pressures students to pay attention in class.
So how do we know when to promote compliance and when to promote non-compliance? I am not talking about defiance and outright rebellion, just maybe some moderate nonconformity. As individuals, are we well calibrated to know when to conform and when to stray? In our work teams, do we know how to balance the two poles? As a society, are we creating a culture that has a happy mix? The proverbial middle path?

The latest Facebook controversy surrounds their plan to offer a service called Free Basics that allows people with feature phones (in the developing world) to access online services without paying for data. The problem is that they can only access Facebook approved apps.
You can’t just surf over to anyplace on the web with Free Basics. Which raises the question: Is Free Basics an altruistic effort to connect the world’s financially strapped people to information and opportunities, or a neocolonial race to capitalize on those markets?
One of the first things I did when I got to the HFES conference this year was to scan the program looking for any research on games, gamification, or game-based training.
And I found a really good one. This study by Rachel Cunningham and her colleagues at Embry-Riddle compared two very similar tablet-based games. Both games requires players to collaborate on the same tablet surface. So it was not remote collaboration, it was real-time co-located collaboration.
I am involved in several consulting projects that involve whether users notice very subtle cues in the environment and if so, how quickly they incorporate it into their situation awareness and/or react to it. I have intentionally used the phrase “and/or” because the detection is often unconscious, which means the reaction can occur without the awareness. And of course the awareness can occur without any need for a response.
While I can’t talk about these projects specifically, they reminded me of the discussion we had in June on brand logos and identity resonance. In that discussion, we wear apparel with logos to demonstrate our identity in a social group. This helps us bond with other members of that group and to differentiate ourselves from non-members.
